Golf Terminology
Ace - A hole in one.
Back Nine - the last 9 holes of an 18 hole course.
Blast - A stroke that picks up sand with it when hitting out of a sand trap.
Caddie (caddy) - Someone who carries a player's club during play and offers him assistance in accordance with the rules.
Card - this is a card you use to record your score.
Closed Face - you address the ball when you know the clubface is pointed towards the left of your target.
Cut Shot - a shot you control so that the ball stops exactly on the green without rolling.
Eagle - when you play a hole at under 2 par.
Eight Iron (pitching niblick) - an iron club that gives a distance of between 115-150 yards.
Extra Hole - is an extra hole played to break a tie game.
Five-Iron (Mashie) - is an iron club used for distances between 145-180 yards for men's clubs.
Five-Wood - is a wooden club used for distances between 190-210 yards for men's clubs.
Green - the whole golf course.
Green Fee - a fee paid to the course to allow the player to use the course.
Greenkeeper - the person who is responsible for the maintenance of the course.
Handicap - it lets the golfer deduct and adjust his actual score to compete on the same level.
Hole in one (ace)- a hole made with one stroke.
Marshal - a person to keep order and handle spectators.
Off-centre - a bad hit.
Par - the number of strokes a player should take to complete a round, this number is given to the golfer on its scorecard.
Penalty Stroke - if you violate a rule you will get an additional stroke added to you score.
Tee - the wooden pick that the golf ball sands on on your first swing.
Water Hole - this could be either a stream, or lake that a player is forced to shoot the ball over.
